How We Met - Chapel Hill, NC Rachel:
During a stressful day on the audit of my client in Chapel Hill, I walked to the kitchen to take a break. While lost in thought, this guy says hi to me. Even though I had been on the audit of this client for the past 4 years (only on-site for approx. 1 month of the year), I had never seen him before. We introduced ourselves and during some small talk, Sean mentions that he's leaving his job in 2 weeks to get his MBA at Vanderbilt. So I didn't think much of it, but I remember leaving the kitchen smiling. :) The next day I was back in Charlotte and got a LinkedIn invite from Sean, the "Kitchen Guy," with a brief message hoping I got back to Charlotte safely. I accepted, but didn't send a message back. On Monday, back up in Chapel Hill at the client site, I made sure to wave at Sean as he walked by our audit room to acknowledge him; Sean did a quintessential double take. We found ourselves in the kitchen at the same time a lot more and kept talking. Once the audit was over and Sean left his job, I agreed to go on a date with him. From very early on, it was impossible to ignore how easy it was to talk to each other and how much we had in common.
Sean: I first noticed this cute auditor a couple years before actually introducing myself. Rachel occasionally worked in our Chapel Hill office, but we'd never run into each other. Through some good timing, I managed to bump into her in the kitchen and introduced myself. Not knowing anything but her first name and her company, I looked her up that weekend on LinkedIn and sent a message, hoping to keep up the positive momentum. She didn't respond to the message that weekend, but surprised me by smiling and waving at me on Monday. As we made trips to the kitchen more frequently, the conversations continued, and I worked up the courage to ask for her number. We squeezed in a few dates before I made the transition to Nashville.
Dating - Charlotte, NC and Nashville, TN The couple stayed in close touch as Sean settled into business school at Vanderbilt, and it wasn't long before frequent visits were planned. Sean was able to secure an internship in Charlotte for the summer after his first year of the MBA, which gave the couple a chance to spend a lot of time together. Visits continued during the second year (made easier thanks to a new Southwest direct route between Nashville and Charlotte), and the couple jointly decided to move to Boston after Sean's graduation, though not without a new furry friend: Finn became part of the family on the day before Sean graduated!
The Proposal - Asheville, NC Sean proposed on June 10, 2017 on a hike with Rachel's family in DuPont State Forest. After Rachel's mom took a pre-planned water break, Sean took Rachel by the hand and brought her to the covered bridge overlooking High Falls. After some heartfelt words, Sean got down on one knee and was relieved to hear Rachel say "Of course, yes!!" The group continued on the hike to a celebratory picnic at Bridal Veil Falls. Sean, Rachel, and puppy Finn moved up to Boston in early July of 2017 and have been enjoying their new jobs, new city, and wedding planning.
